      What are your qualifications?

We are juniors and seniors at Green Mountain College majoring in adventure education. We have planned and participated in many adventures throughout our years here. During these trips we are supervised by our professors and adjuncts.

      Aren’t these trips dangerous?

We acknowledge the inherent risks in all natural environments and have taken every precaution during the planning of each course and will be employing comprehensive risk management plans for all trips.

Will I be able to get in touch with my parents/child?

Yes. All parents will be provided an instructor’s cell phone number. If you need to get in touch with your child, simply leave a message with our instructors and we will get the message to them. In the event a conversation is required we can facilitate that as well assuming cell coverage.

Is there any prior experience required?

No. All are welcome on the trips. We’re focused on learning and fun!

      What will they learn?

A lot! Our trips are designed to develop human skills such as teamwork, group dynamics as much as they are about developing outdoor skills. Students will be encouraged to communicate, make decisions, engage challenge and have fun.

      Are cell phones allowed?

No. If a student has a cell phone they will be asked to turn it in for a few days. We ask this so that everyone is fully present on the course and committed to the group’s development.

How will you deal with disabilities?

Folks facing physical challenges may consider a course that best fits their ability level. For example, canoeing does not require tons of mobility, but does require lots of participation.

Where is the closest medical center?

Depends on which trip you choose. All courses have risk management plans and all instructors will be fully aware of emergency procedures and options.

      Is there a rain date?

Nope. Rain or shine we’re making it happen!

What do I have to bring?

See the downloadable “gear list for all courses” on the upper right on this site.

      How can I get pictures?

Participants are welcome to bring cameras and parents/teachers may take photos during departure and return.

How many instructors will be there?

Each student leadership team is comprised of three or four students and one industry professional to observe their performance.

What if my child gets sick?

Folks get sick on trips every so often. Depending on the type of illness and participant’s history with such ailments, they sit out a day and attempt to recover. Any student or chaperone experiencing 24 hours or more of illness will be taken off the trip as soon as possible to ensure their recovery and comfort.

Who if anyone will be supervising?

There will be three or four students and an industry professional.

      What are the sleeping arrangements?

Males and females will be split into separate shelters with an instructor/chaperone nearby.

How far into the wilderness will my child be?

The climbing and mountain biking will not spend any time in a “backcountry” situation. Canoeing will technically spend a portion of the trip in a backcountry situation briefly. All evacuation routes and emergency personnel will be within reasonable distances.

See the downloadable "trip itinerary" link on this site which will be available soon.

Can parents go on the trip?

Parents may go on trips under the following conditions:

      • They are serving as a chaperone (this function will be further articulated)
      • They have the at least a little outdoor experience
      • Are going to allow the process of adventure education take place
      • The number of parents on each trip will be limited to two to ensure our permit numbers are in accordance to area regulations.

      What will my child learn?

Our trips are designed for fun, teamwork, communication, decision making and a host of other desired outcomes as indicated by the participant group.

      Why is this trip free?

Green Mountain College and the students enrolled in the course are subsidizing the cost of the experience.

      Will my child’s equipment suffice?

It depends. Our instructors will be in touch with your children on a number of occasions during the semester. One of the objectives of these will be to ensure everyone has the right equipment. Likely, if you have a rain jacket, some warm clothes headlamp/flashlight and a sleeping bag/pad, you’re likely well on your way.  For those who do not have them, we will provide sleeping bags on a first come first serve basis.  A downloadable gear list has been posted on this site.  In the event your child needs a sleeping bag and we have no more for rental, we will suggest local stores where the items can be rented.

What if my child had special dietary needs?

This is common on outdoor trips and there are a variety of ways to successfully navigate these.

How is transportation taken care of?

We will drive to you for pick-up and return you to your agency’s location at the trips end. During the course chaperones on the courses may drive their own vehicles for comfort and mobility.
